The Board of Directors of Theater: Research & Development, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization, is proud to announce their new theater company - Women's Repertory Theatre of San Diego. Founded by former Diversionary Theater Artistic Director, Gayle Feldman, and former Managing Director of Bowery/Blackfriars Theatre, Todd Blakesley, WRT will serve to illuminate the lives of both women and men through the performance of new, modern, and classic plays with the majority of roles going to women.

They have joined forces with Lee Lampard, whose Actor's Asylum near SDSU, will function as the WRT home. "We plan to evolve this space into a special haven for performers and patrons alike", says Lampard, whose eclectic background includes equal parts stage experience and business analysis/programming.

Like many cities across the U.S., San Diego is packed with extraordinary female talent, which is sadly underused. "The plan is to invert the traditional theater make-up," declared Feldman. "Our mission promotes equality, power, and joy for women in theater. The female body becomes the primary vehicle for the investigation, exploration, and expression of culture." By expanding the variety and quality of roles that women will play on stage WRT becomes a force for social change.

In addition to increasing roles that women will play, WRT will develop new works that feature strong female leads; explore the classics from a non-gender bias; and examine men's lives from a female point of view.

The theater's first show, "Carol, A Christmas Story" (freely adapted from Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", co-written by Feldman and Blakesley) will open on December 6, 2001 and is scheduled to run through January 6. The production is under the direction of Francine Chemnick (Artistic Director of Muse Theatre). Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 pm and Sunday nights at 7pm. General admission is $15. Seniors, Students and Military are $10.

"Carol" is a hilarious comedy but under the laughs lie deeper issues such as ambivalence in mother/daughter relationships; childhood innocence and trauma; and the illusion that making changes in one's life is easy.

Come join us for a delightfully irreverent Christmas offering @ WRT's home base, The Actor's Asylum, which is located at 6663 El Cajon Blvd in the College area.
